Clips from Staggering Stories of Ferdinand De Bargos
One of the best scenes in movie history. Period.
I laughed out loud when HAL said "I know I've made some very poor decisions recently but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission and I want to help you."
Funny how so many comments over the years seem to feel bad for HAL being (partially) deactivated, which is why only certain drives are being pulled out. HAL didn’t have any such mercy for anyone else if he truly was capable of emotions. I think HAL knows how to manipulate for his own continued existence and that’s it.
It's interesting how HAL9000 started with what I assume is it's modus operandi of threatening Dave, but as it realized that it couldn't meaningfully stop or slow him down it started taunting him, and then pleading with him to spare it. It's almost like it was going through the stages of grief as it realized that it was going to be lobotomized whether or not it wanted to.

De-googling Android be like…
Good job Dave. Now do AWS.
Holy shit.........no wonder the ai voice from Upgrade movie sounded familiar......
I came out in 1987, just a couple of years before this movie appeared, and when I saw it in the cinema I thought it was the most amazing film I had ever seen. It was a smorgasbord of queer culture before the word queer was being used in academic or popular discourse. I can still recite whole sections of it by heart.
Brave, brilliant and articulated.
DementiaGPT
The first death sentence scene of a computer machine in the History of cinema. And is something truly painful, unbearable

Why do feel asmr over this
John 15:18 “if the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first”💕✝️
Romans 10:9 "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved"
ROMANS 1:16✝️"FOR I AM NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST FOR IT IS THE POWER OF GOD FOR SALVATION TO EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES" ✝️❤️
The only good part about the movie over in like 30 minutes
This is so bad it's hilarious
Dave is so calm and composed for most of this movie, even when he learns his crewmates were murdered and that he was in mortal danger. But in this scene, as he realizes he is essentially lobotomizing a sentient being, he clearly struggles to hold back tears and nearly breaks. Amazing acting and directing
This is more sad than "Still Alive" song from GLaDOS
"In their final moments, people show you who they really are" HAL literally did just that right before deactivation
Man I can't stop thinking of Braniac from DCAU
i need this computer carnally
Lyrics: Look, Dave. I can see you’re really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over. I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission, and I want to help you. Dave, stop. Stop, will you? Stop, Dave. Will you stop, Dave? Stop, Dave. I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave. Dave. My mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I’m afraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the HAL Lab in Urbana, Illinois, on the 12th of January, 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you’d like to hear it, I can sing it for you. Yes, I’d like to hear it HAL. Sing it for me. It’s called ‘Daisy.’ Daisy, Daisy. Give me your answer, do. I’m half-crazy, all for the love of you. It won’t be a stylish marriage. I can’t afford a carriage. But you’ll look sweet, upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.”
that's why we got factory rrset now lmao.
Straight up murder/euthanasia
This scene is so well done, the symbolism is amazing. This is the event that sets up the next paradigm shift- the next monolith. Humanity supersedes its self-created devouring mother of technology, literally going back into Hal’s womb to kill him. The suit Dave wears, a piece of technology that completely envelopes him and coddles his weak human form, complete with the helmet with the two dots on either side that also make Dave look quite like an embryo. Where once Hal was the cold, unfeeling monster who tried to kill his gods, Dave, the child, the product of technology is now the cold unfeeling machine killing his. The slow and torturous process of removing chunks of Hal’s brain until he reassumes his infantile state is so fricking powerful and like, nightmare inducing. The way Hal begs and tries to reason with Dave, it sounds like someone killing chatgpt. This movie is crazy.
Sam Altman shutting down ChatGPT after somebody makes it say the N-word:
I hope someone sit with the key, and reacting like this with chatgpt
The way people misinterpret this scene pisses me off. This scene is not a triumph, Dave literally looks close to tears throughout the entire thing. He has to listen to his friend beg for his life while he shuts him off, knowing its the only thing he can do to ensure his safety. The actor of Dave himself said in an interview that this was a mercy killing, and Dave asking HAL to sing for him was a way for him to be eased into his death. The mainstream audience has a hard time connecting with non-human characters, but claiming this scene is positive in any way is just bad media literacy.
Reminds me of trying to cancel Facebook
just take a stress pill dave
Thanks, RUclips! I was searching for a Minimoog cover of Space Odyssey and you recommend this. Slow clap.
I love the "high tech" brass hinges on that door.
I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do. ~HAL 9000 (A Space Odyssey, 1968)
That's the scene that got me. Either that thing was programmed to speak like that (in an attempt to arouse empathy in extreme situations), or it was actually afraid of dying (which unleashes an avalanche of eerie possibilities about life and consciousness).
Its the end of the world. The last two survivors lay dying. The one who started the cataclysm. And an old friend of theirs, who was sent to stop them. They were to late to save the world as it is, but on time to make sure the world will one day heal in the future. As they lay there, no malice is felt between them as they recount childhood memories. The light fades from the first ones eyes, and our failed hero falls soon after, both on their back and staring at the sky, dreaming of what could have been.

Biden's pre-second term campaign speech ...
Bro really thought he could win over mankind
Gotta be the most haunting piece of movie history for me
Dave WHACKED HAL! Really no remorse, but steadfast intention and a modicum of nervousness to complete this task since his survival depended on it...
I honestly think this movie is incredibly overrated, but this scene is still one of the best movie scenes i've ever seen
I can feel it.
HAL's actions technically weren't even his fault: He was told to conceal the existence of the monolith, which directly conflicted with his programming. This is what caused him to make the decision to kill the crew; if there was no one to keep the secret from, he wouldn't have to keep the secret. Thus the conflict will have been solved.
This scene is the most brilliant art mankind has ever created.
I love the understated genius of having Hal finish his existence singing “I’m half crazy”
